Now in its 14th season,
the highly acclaimed Elizabeth R
is an innovative fifty-minute, one-woman show
that presents an intimate look at England's
most famous monarch - Queen Elizabeth I.
No static icon, this Elizabeth is a real person,
with understandable emotions and problems.
She spits out some vintage Elizabethan invective,
but draws on her strength of character
to make tough decisions that affect her subjects
in England and in the New World.
The script develops the character and emotions
of Elizabeth the woman, the actress, and the Queen.
Historical episodes such as Sir Walter Ralegh's
colonies on Roanoke Island, and the Spanish Armada's
attack on England are adroitly interspersed
with lighter fare.
This Elizabeth sings, tells jokes,
cries, laughs, but always maintains her focus
on her duty to her country
and the accomplishment of her life's goals.
The critics agree: Elizabeth R
is a "don't miss hit show" with "a charismatic Queen
who captivates her audiences
just as surely as Elizabeth herself did."
